3 instagram-worthy senior picture locations in des moines
Are you starting to plan for your senior photo session? As a Des Moines senior photographer, the question I get asked most often by far is…
“What locations should I use for my senior pictures?”
There’s a lot to think about when it comes to senior pictures, and choosing the right location is always the top at everyone’s list. Having been in the photography business for 10 years, I’ve scouted dozens and dozens of photo locations in Des Moines and the surrounding metro area, and can tell you that we have so many fantastic options right here in central Iowa, with a ton of variety oftentimes in just one spot! Here are some of the best senior picture locations in Des Moines that would be perfect for your session!
Downtown + Garage Rooftops
Downtown Des Moines is always a go-to spot for both senior guys and girls alike. With tall, modern architecture and the Principal Riverwalk nearby, you can achieve a number of truly unique looks in one area.
Parking garage rooftops offer unique and stunning views of the city that you just can’t get on the ground! Be mindful that, while garages are open to the public, they are privately owned and advanced permission with security is required. Without permission, security will ask you and your photographer to leave, so please don’t do that! I’ve never had them tell me no, but there are times when they may not be able to allow it, especially during peak times when major events are occurring like the Iowa State Fair (Park & Ride services).
East Village
Another Des Moines staple, the East Village combines urban charm with historic architecture, including views of the Iowa State Capitol from E. Locust St.
With colorful murals, brick walls, trendy storefronts, and a mix of modern and vintage elements, this area offers plenty of variety for seniors who want a vibrant backdrop that’s always on-trend.
Water Works Park
Just southwest of downtown Des Moines, Water Works Park offers 1500 acres of open grassy fields, wooded trails, and the scenic Raccoon River, providing one of the most picturesque and diverse photo locations for senior pictures.
Every spring, the blooming crabapple trees in the Arie den Boer Arboretum are a major draw for high school seniors (or even current juniors) wanting to capture gorgeous images among the fragrant blooms.
The River Constellation sculpture near the Killinger Family Stage is another major draw for high school seniors. This unique and artistic backdrop offers a blend of modern art and natural surroundings, and is absolutely stunning both in the daytime or in the evening when the orbs are lit.
Senior Picture Locations Des Moines
I have an entire resource that I send to all of my clients with over 20 location ideas in the Des Moines metro area, including a few hidden gems that I only share with clients. Places where people always say “Wow! Where is this spot?” It’s a place where I’ve rarely seen another photographer there. While places like downtown and the East Village are very recognizable and popular with many Des Moines area seniors (for good reason!), utilizing a location that not everyone else is using will help make your senior pictures more unique and truly memorable, and you won’t have to worry about crowds or photo bombers in your portraits. Makes for a more stress-free and fun experience all around!
