Fall Family Photos at Greenwood Park in Des Moines

Wow, God has really blessed us with an absolutely beautiful fall here in Central Iowa!

2020 has been a rough year for all of us really. But despite the challenges this hear has brought, it’s hard to ignore the beauty all around us.

I had the pleasure of photographing this fun family of five at one of my favorite locations for portraits, Greenwood Park, in the heart of Des Moines.

Greenwood Park is always a popular choice for portrait sessions, and for good reason. It has some of the most beautiful mature trees in the area that are full of vibrant color this time of year.

It’s also a large park with tons of variety for your family photo session. With 80 acres including a Rose Garden, manicured landscapes, mature trees, a pond, an amphitheater, plus the Des Moines Art Center, you can easily achieve a variety of looks all in one place.

With the gorgeous fall color we opted to stick with a wooded backdrop for most of these family photos.

I love how mom coordinated everyone’s outfits in navy and gold. They look like they stepped out of a Banana Republic ad! By pairing plaid prints with solids, they had a cohesive look bursting with interest and texture.

During family sessions I always make sure to get a few photos of just mom and dad together. These are always some of my personal favorites.

Then, each of the kiddos with each parent. It’s so special to see how they each connect to mom and dad.

One question I ask all of my clients is how they plan to display their photos in their home. Are they looking to fill a horizontal space over a couch, or a vertical space on a narrow wall? Do they want to decorate their stairway or a hallway? These questions really get the wheels turning.

Mom told me at her initial pre-session consultation (which are always complimentary and I treat you to coffee) that she wanted a vertical image of each of the kids, and a wall portrait of the whole family. With a home remodel in the near future she knew she wouldn’t have the specific spot until the construction is complete, but I was able to do a mock up using a stock room image for her to visualize how they would look:

Master bedrooms are the perfect place for photos of just you and your spouse.
